Each calculator takes the live spot price for gold or silver in pounds sterling per troy ounce, divides by 31.1034768 to get the price per gram, then multiplies by the purity of your item and the weight you enter. For scrap calculators we also show a typical dealer offer range of around 70–90% of melt value, so you can see what a buyer is likely to pay as well as what the metal itself is worth.
The purity figures we use match UK hallmarks: 24K is 99.99% pure, 22K is 91.67%, 18K is 75%, 14K is 58.5%, 9K is 37.5%, and sterling silver is 92.5%. Pre-1947 UK coins are 50% silver, and pre-1920 coins are sterling (92.5%). Full details of our data sources and update frequency are on the methodology page.
