Understanding today’s gold price
The price shown above is the live spot price — the current wholesale market rate for one troy ounce of pure (999.9) gold for immediate settlement. It is the benchmark from which every UK gold valuation is derived, whether you are pricing a Sovereign, a gold bar or a bag of scrap jewellery.
Our feed updates continuously throughout the trading day, tracking the international spot markets in London and New York. The timestamp beside each price shows exactly when the last update arrived, so you always know how fresh the figure you are looking at is.
Gold is traded globally in US dollars, so the sterling price you see is the dollar spot price converted at the live GBP/USD exchange rate. That means the UK gold price can move even when the dollar price is flat — a weaker pound pushes the sterling price of gold higher, and a stronger pound pulls it lower.
Prices are quoted per troy ounce, the standard precious-metals unit equal to 31.1035 grams — slightly heavier than a kitchen (avoirdupois) ounce. To get the price per gram, divide the ounce price by 31.1035; our calculators do this conversion for you automatically. Read more on our methodology page.
